Must see TV.

In times like these you’ve got to have a credible source for news especially on topics like the economy and politics…..that is why I watch:

The Daily Show

and
The Colbert Report

Why you ask? well, because laughter is the best medicine.

Obama! Obama! Obama!

for those who’ve seen Ratatouille…

Posted by lilia on July 4th, 2007

Imagine with me for a minute…imagine that instead of a rat with a taste for fine dining he were an “illegal alien” in that gourmet kitchen. Yes it would make sense that he were the dishwasher, invisible to the rest of the kitchen staff. That is, until he started making suggestions to the rookie chef on how to improve his “soup.” The rookie chef being insecure as can be in the BIG city and also coming from a humble background thinks nothing of the fact that he is actually taking suggestions from someone who can’t even speak his language. Ah, the soup is a hit…must have been the “oregano”…he he. So the rookie chef gets noticed for “his” cooking and the relationship with the source of his inspiration grows. The “immigrant” thrives on the fact that even if it is indirectly he is living his dream of cooking, and the rookie chef is, well, no longer a rookie. Well of course eventually the truth comes out….the exterminator (immigration) gets an anonymous phone call that there are “rodents” (illegals) in the building. Oh how could this be in a fine establishment that tends to serve only the well bred “rightful” citizens. The kind of citizens that draft up immigration “reform” that would classify the very cooks in the kitchen serving their fine gourmet meals as unfit residents because well…they are seen as little above rodents who congregate in masses. Then of course the controversy divides the kitchen staff where most quit and before you know it the kitchen is full of dare I say…”illegal aliens”. Just then the most anti-immigrant powerful politician happens to come in for a meal…turns out that this meal connects him to a distant memory of his humanity common to us all regardless of our backgrounds…a truly heartfelt moment.

I told you it was crazy expensive…

Article on most expensive residential realty.

Well at least it is not the most expensive place in the world ;-). I guess it makes it that much more of a unique experience to live here. It’s worth every penny…at least for a season.

Asian-American Pop Stars.

Posted by lilia on March 10th, 2007

I just read an article in last weekend’s New York Times (3/4/07) titled “Trying to Crack the Hot 100 about the difficulty of Asian-American’s have in reaching pop star status. It certainly acknowledges there are Asians who’ve reached high level success in music but it focuses more on what could be holding this particular group of Americans back. In truth there are multi-fold challenges but one specifically stood out to me:

“…Andy Goldmark, said that Asian-Americans have lagged behind not because of discrimination but because they have yet to create their own popular music sound the way African-Americans and Latinos have.”

” “Asian-Americans have tended to follow what’s going in the pop world rather than use the Asian-American path to invent new things,” said Mr. Goldmark, a songwriter and music producer and a former vice president for talent at Jive Records.”

” He said many artists are beginning to find their voice and are incorporating Asian instruments into their music or writing lyrics that address issues…”

Immediately groups like Cibo Matto and Buffalo Daughter come to mind, Japanese girl bands that a few years back (1999-early 00’s) we used to listen to all the time though I don’t exactly how successful they were in terms of record sales in the US. Yes, they were not Asian-AMERICAN but what I’m trying to point out is that they had a very particular style that was unique and very popular in the “cool” KCRW crowd. There’s certainly something to learn here. I’m sure there are many more such examples I am not aware of, but again the point is why agree with the above quote. I am all too familiar with the immigrant reality of being neither here nor there which is where I see Asian-American aspiring pop stars even if they are many generations native as were African-Americans before their unique styles sprouted forth.

What in the world happened to INTEGRITY?

This is the sort of news that gets me all riled up…

Newt Gingrich was having an AFFAIR while he was persecuting Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal!

I just read the story at Yahoo! News from Associated Press. He CLAIMS he was just after the perjury….yeah right! And then you have stories like what really happened in Abu Ghraib as shown in the HBO documentary. Lying is the name of the game with this administration. Where’s Newt? Oh yes, he resigned….riiiiight. Even if he was still around I highly doubt he would lift a finger. AND HE’S CONSIDERING RUNNING FOR OFFICE? Give me a break….please. ENOUGH of the hypocrisy! Never before have I been so absolutely abhorred by right wing conservatism! No it’s not just this, it’s everything, the inside deals, good old boys club, all the lies, Libby, lies (FOX NEWS), this war…this war….THIS WAR!!! The Sopranos are seriously beginning to look like saints in comparison to Bush and his cronies. And then there’s the Patriot Act….What in the world is happening to this country?

This is the LAST STRAW! I’ve had enough of the political right wing “religious conservatism!” Values, values, values? It seems the only thing they really value is themselves, their power, their money, their own self gratification!
